Honoured for delivering the best user experience overall, FutureLearn joined a host of winners revealed last night at the third User Experience UK Awards during a prestigious event held at SapientNitro’s spectacular Spital Square venue in London.

Founded to recognise the most innovative and exceptional cases of user experience and user centred design, the UXUK Awards ceremony combined to celebrate with World Usability Day 2015.

UXUK Awards 2015 Shortlist released!

We are pleased to announce the UXUK Awards 2015 Shortlist. With over 130 entries this year, it was a tough competition and this shortlist is the best of some very strong contenders.

Now in their third year, The User Experience UK Awards recognise excellence in user-focused digital or service design. Past winners include the likes of TFL, NatWest, Royal Navy, BBC, Great Rail Journeys, Oxfam and more.

Taking place at Sapient Nitro in London, all of this years winners will be announced at the UXUK Awards ceremony held on Thursday 12th November (World Usability Day). Follow our twitter feed for live updates or apply for tickets to attend.

Judge’s Q&A: Jack Holmes

  1. Do you have a favourite app & website in terms of the design and user experience?

    Gourmet Burger Kitchen app. It’s one of those apps that has a bit of personality. You know someone has taken the time not just to create a usable app, but achieved what so many of us aim for: delight.

    The first time I ordered a take away, I won a reward, free bacon sauce with my next order. Who doesn’t love free bacon sauce? That’s what I call a delightful experience. It remembers my favorite orders automatically, reminds me that I usually order the honey comb shake when I order the taxi driver burger. (If you’ve tried one of their honey comb shakes you’ll know why this feature is so important). They’re rolling out the ‘order from your table’ feature so you don’t have to get up to order, of course it remembers your payment details and most importantly I’m only 1 order away from a free burger.

    It’s the integration with the whole customer experience that makes this app so great.

UXUK Awards 2015 Deadline Extended

We’ve received your emails and your calls, have spoken to the judges and shortlisting committee and all agreed we can extend the deadline slightly.

Therefore UXUK Awards 2015 entries need to be submitted with all entry materials by Wednesday 23rd September 16:00.

UXUK student entries are still due Thursday 8th October 16:00.

    I love Spotify. It’s easy to find music I know and to discover new artists. I especially like being able to move from one device to another and continue listening where I left off. It’s the sole reason I got a mobile contract with unlimited data.

  1. Do you have a favourite app & website in terms of the design and user experience?

    Interestingly, I’ve just realised loads of my favorite apps are to do with travelling and getting from A toB.

    I love Uber. I love how it knows exactly what problem it is solving and focuses relentlessly on that. Everything is centered around convenience, and getting that exactly right means that people will pay those surge prices to get a cab when they want, no waiting. It has come into a crowded marketplace and because of their focus and amazing execution and design they are getting increasingly more customers.

    I’m a huge fan of AirBnB too, both beautifully designed and a pleasure to use. It’s a fantastic example of design, technology and product coming together to make something excellent that solves a problem in a novel and useful way.

    Citymapper is fantastic so well designed with little touches of humour, and I love the new Trainline app redesign – you can just tell it’s had the hard edges sanded off by regular, good user research until its just a simple pleasure to use.

    Despite my comments in a moment about Easyjet, I do like their app and how easy it is to check in with it – and I also don’t need to print out loads of paper, just scan my phone. That’s fantastic.

    I also love Soundcloud’s new app, its something I use almost daily and its great.

  1. Do you have a favourite app & website in terms of the design and user experience?
    I love Citymapper – from the beginning it’s been a great blend of functionality that solves a real user need (Londoners who need to navigate their way through the city using uncoordinated modes of public transportation) and a deceptively simple design. Even in the first version, it had a “delighter” in the form of a teleporter transport mode, a fun little animation that instantly beamed you to your destination. Their clean visual design and focus on the core user task make the interface effective even when users are stressed due to unexpected transport issues.

  1. Do you have a favourite app & website in terms of the design and user experience?
    I dig SoundCloud. The way they’ve made the song’s waveform central to the experience is memorable. If Spotify or Apple Music tried to lift and shift it to their services it’d fail. Creating something unique and ownable is what we should all strive for. That’s good branding. That’s good design. Add to that they’ve made it social by atomizing songs to beats and riffs. it’s pretty amazing.

    I really like the new Expedia APP. Irrespective of where or on what you have made a booking, everything hooks up and arrives on your APP. Great experience, and adds a huge volume of confidence to users. Very cool.
